Carlos Roa (June 1999)

Goalkeeper Carlos Roa conceded exactly zero goals during the goal stage of the 1998 World Cup and played a starring role in Argentina’s penalty-shootout win over England in the knockout phase.

A year later, he retired from football to devote himself to his religion. He was only 29.

Marco Van Basten (1995)

Another person who sustained injuries was Marco Van Basten. After sitting out for two years with a bum ankle, the Dutch maestro retired at age 31 in 1995.

Before he left, he graced us with this goal in the Netherlands’ victory over the USSR in the Euro 1988 final.

Sergio Aguero (December 2021)

Ex-Manchester City and Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero announced his retirement from football at the age of 33 due to a heart condition.

Barcelona later announced that the discomfort had been caused by an arrhythmia — a broad term to describe any heart rhythm that is not completely normal — that would require treatment over a three-month period.

The former Manchester City forward has since had regular cardiac exams to monitor his health, with the results advising him it would be a risk to carry on with his professional career.

At 33, Sergio Aguero had already seen out most of his career, winning multiple trophies and becoming one of the greatest Premier League goalscorers while playing for Manchester City.

Jackson Wilshere (July 2022)

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere announced his retirement from playing professional football at age 30. 

Injuries prevented Wilshere from getting consistent game time since leaving the north London club in 2018. He spent last season with Danish side Aarhus.

Alfie Mawson (February 2023)

Former Swansea and Fulham defender Alfie Mawson retires from football due to injury at the age of 29.

The centre-back played alongside the likes of Jordan Pickford, Tammy Abraham, Jack Grealish and James Ward-Prowse at England youth level.

But while that lot have gone on to enjoy top-level careers, Mawson has hung up his boots before the age of 30.

At club level, he rose through the ranks of the Football League, named Wycombe’s Player of the Year back in 2014-15 before achieving promotion from League One with Barnsley the following year. He then went on to make 80 Premier League appearances for Swansea and Fulham.

Now back at Wycombe, he’s called it quits midway through the 2022-23 campaign.

David Silva (July 2023)

David Silva announced his retirement at the age 37 from professional football after an impressive 20-year career.

Unfortunately, his career came to an end at the due to a serious ACL injury.

Throughout his illustrious career, Silva showcased numerous virtues, including talent, vision and goal-scoring ability, making him one of the most successful and well-rounded players in football history.

He never disappointed in big games and left a lasting impact on the minds of fans, especially with his memorable headed goal against Italy in the Euro 2012 final.

Having played for Eibar, Celta Vigo, Valencia, Manchester City and Real Sociedad, Silva’s impressive stats include 124 goals and 154 assists in 784 games, earning him immense respect and admiration from the football world.

Eden Hazard (October 2023)

At the age of just 32, Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from football.

The Belgian departed Real Madrid in the summer of 2023, a year before his contract was due to expire, and didn’t sign with any other club despite various rumours.

Following an injury suffered in his first season at Real Madrid, in a Champions League clash against PSG in the 2019/20 campaign, Hazard was never the same and struggled with injuries at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

He retires having achieved success with Lille and then, most notably, with Chelsea and the Belgian national team, who he led to third place at the 2018 World Cup.
