Three Mourners Lose Their Lives During Funeral Procession

Three mourners have lost their own lives while participating in a funeral procession, of another relative that died in controversial circumstances.

The first death was that of 62 year old woman identified as Margrate Achan, after fire allegedly ignited by a nine year old child, engulfed her thatched hut.

The fire had gutted 10 grass-thatched huts in Kalomerisiep village in Lorengecora sub-county of Uganda on Saturday afternoon.

A report in the Ugandan Observer said Achan got trapped in her grass-thatched hut where her body was burnt beyond recognition.

It was during her funeral procession on Sunday, that a twist was added to the mourning.

A scuffle broke out between her relations and those of the nine old girl who was alleged to have caused the fire that claimed her life.

The scuffle eventually led to the death of two mouners, Micheal Longole, Mt Moroto Regional police spokesperson reportedly said.

According to the account, the two mourners were allegedly lynched in the misunderstanding that ensued in the course of the funeral procession; no clear details were provided.

But the medium credits Longole as saying police responded quickly and calmed down the situation amidst resistance from some people who were carrying stones, bows, and arrows that tried to harm the officers.

Longole added that the mob action prompted officers to fire live bullets to disperse them, and that a stray bullet hit a one Mariko Achia killing him on spot.

‘’It is not in our policy to shoot to kill unless the life of officers on duty is at stake,’’ Longole reportedly said adding that a case of murder by shooting as investigations into the incident was ongoing.

Aside the Three mourners that lost their lives, latest reports are that two of the  eight police officers interrogated over last month’s raid on the home of deputy speaker of parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, are to face the police disciplinary court.
