Thief Miners Meet Their Waterloo – Get Trapped Underground

The old adage of many days for the thief and one only for the owner of the house may have played out in the life of 30 miners.
They have met their waterloo attempting to steal what does not belong to them. The have now been trapped into a mining pit belonging to AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) in Obuasi Ghana.
About 30 people, believed to be illegal miners [galamseyers] have been trapped in a pit belonging to AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) in Obuasi.

The illegal miners allegedly sneaked into the mining pit called Cote d’Ivoire pit, owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), Ghana graphic online reports.
It is located at Anwiam, a suburb of Obuasi, unaware that danger lay ahead.
It was when the relatives waited for them and could not find them that they raised the alarm, but up till Tuesday, they were still in the pit.

The Assembly Member for the Ahansonyewodea Electoral Area, Vincent Donkor who confirmed the incident, said that he was informed by some relatives of the victims at about 3 am Tuesday.
He said he was told that the men had gone missing for five days after leaving their respective homes in search for gold.
According to Odonkor, he has also reported the matter to the officials at the Security Office of AGA, who in turn asked that the matter be formally reported at the local police station for action.
He informed further that the security personnel of the AGA have also confirmed that the ‘illegal miners’, have sent a signal to the security detail at the entrance to the pit that they were afraid to come out of the pit for fear of being arrested.
In spending five days in the pit, it is feared that the men may, not only have exhausted their provision, but may also have become weary.

Although the pit is being protected by security personnel, but it was not known whether the particular one the victims went to patronise had been abandoned by AGA or not, but Odonkor informed that when AGA wanted to close such pits they would make an announcement, but in this case, no announcement had been made.

A police source contacted at the Obuasi Divisional Command said it had not received any information about the incident.
