As Manchester United prepares to make a move for Ivan Provedel, Andre Onana may find out upon his return that he is no longer the team’s first choice goalkeeper.

Onana, United’s normal first-choice stopper, is now away representing Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations. Since coming to Old Trafford from Inter, Onana has faced criticism, and it has been stated that Erik ten Hag is already trying to bring in a replacement. Provedel has reportedly surfaced as a contender for the Premier League team, according to Quotidiano Sport.

According to the report, United could make a bid for the 29-year-old in the January transfer window to ensure they have a quality option to rely on. The Italian has impressed at Lazio and made headlines across Europe this season when he scored a last-minute equaliser in his team’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

Provedel signed a five-year contract with Lazio after leaving Spezia in 2022. He has made 72 appearances for the Rome team thus far, conceding 70 goals while maintaining 32 clean sheets.

United will need to rely on Tom Heaton to start in goal until Onana returns from his Cameroonian campaign in the Ivory Coast, unless they bring in a new option. Altay Bayindir, 25, will have to settle for a bench spot.
