Ten Hag Takes Blame For Man Utd’s Dire Carabao Cup Defeat To Newcastle

Following Manchester United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle United, Erik ten Hag says he “has to put it right.”

The Red Devils’ Carabao Cup defence was decisively ended on Wednesday night at a depressing Old Trafford by goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall, and Joe Willock. The Magpies successfully exacted revenge for their defeat in the competition’s final last season by breaking a number of undesirable records against Ten Hag’s team. Only a few days following a crushing 3-0 loss to fierce rivals Manchester City, manager Ten Hag accepted responsibility for the setback but maintained his confidence in his team’s ability to bounce back.

After the game, he told Sky Sports: “We know it’s not good enough. We have to take responsibility for it, I have to take responsibility for it. I feel sorry for the fans. It’s below our standards and I have to put it right.

“We have to recover from it. We have to do it quickly and Saturday is the next game [against Fulham]. We have to raise our standards. This is not good enough. I am confident players will stand up, they are sticking together, you have seen they have tried but we know this is not good enough. I am responsible for this and we have to do this together.

“You only get your confidence when you get the right results and that is only possible when you are following the rules, the principles, be in the game, winning your battles, going to the fight, but especially doing it together. You have to do it as a team.

“That is the only way; stick together, but you have to be disciplined and you have to do it with togetherness, everyone needs to take responsibility, be accountable and co-operate. That is the key word. We have a night’s sleep and then we will pick the team and the tactics and most important is the mentality we have to put in.”

United might not have much to play for in the upcoming months at this rate. They are seventh in the Premier League, players are struggling, and Ten Hag’s job is coming under more and more strain. Their chances of taking home trophies also appear to be dwindling. Both on and off the pitch, the team is having issues, and there doesn’t seem to be a quick fix.

Hopefully, United can avoid a third straight defeat in all competitions when they play Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
