Super Eagles Mourn Loss Of Former National Coach

The Super Eagles team is in mourning over loss of a former national coach following the announcing of his passing in a WhatsApp message.

The message was signed by Bolade Adesuyi based on information from his family.

It said former national team coach Festus Onigbinde, who led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea just passed on

Onigbinde, who turned 88 on March 5, died on Monday.

The family announcing his passing, described him as a respected football figure and community leader, praying for his soul to rest perfectly in the bosom of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Mourning the former national coach, the Super Eagles described him as s respected leader and true servant of Nigerian football.

In a statement on Tuesday via X, the team said:

“We commiserate with the family of our former coach, Festus Adegboyega Onigbinde, following his passing. A respected leader and a true servant of Nigerian football. Rest in peace, Coach”.

The Eagle reports that the late Onigbinde was instrumental to the nationa team (then known as the Green Eagles)’s impressive outing at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, which it however lost 1–3 to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

He was in charge of the team between 1982 and 1984,; returning in 2002, in place of late Shuaibu Amodu.
