Stampede At Bauchi Assembly Following Tear Gas Shots By Security Agents

There was stampede at the the Bauchi State House of Assembly today, following tear gas shots fired by security agents.

The aim was to disperse 20 lawmakers elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, during the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker at the premises of the Bauchi state House of Assembly’s complex.

The twenty lawmakers has rejected the emergence of Abubakar Suleiman Ningi as Speaker of the 9th Assembly.

They opted to conducting their own inauguration during which they elected Kawuwa Shehu Damina as speaker, and Tukur Ahmed as Deputy Speaker.

While they were thinking they had got it well done, security agents emerged at the scene, firing tear gas and dispersing them. .

The Eagle understands that the members decided to conduct their own election, after having been outsmarted by colleagues.

Eleven members of the house alleged to be loyalists of the governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed had conducted an inauguration early in the day where they elected Ningi, contrary to the 8am originally agreed, By law, the House needs 11 members to form a quorum.

Ningi’s camp who had arrived the complex very early, had taken advantage of the absence of the those loyal to Damina tl to conduct their election.

The 11 lawmakers elected Ningi as Speaker and Ahmed Kawule, the member representing Zungur Galambi constituency as Deputy Speaker.

Ningi was nominated by Babayo Muhammad, member representing Hardawa constituency and Jamilu Umar Dahiru, the only NNPP member who is representing Bauchi Central constituency.
