Shooting Incident Forces YABATECH To Suspend Students’ Week

The cult clash amidst shooting that occurred at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) on Wednesday has forced the school to suspend the ongoing students’ Week.

Arrangements made to ensure the week goes on fine, may have therefore, gone into the drains.

The latest step by the YABATECH was announced by Mr Joe Ejiofor, Deputy Registrar who interacted with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said necessary steps were being taken by the school to restore sanity as the event attracted an influx of miscreants and non-students in the school.

Ejiofor, also the Head of Public Relations unit of YABATECH, expressed discontentment over the incident.

He said the person who was shot was not a student of YABATECH and that shooter had been apprehended.

“Truly there was a problem that resulted in a shooting incident which took place on Wednesday during the ongoing ‘Students’ week’ but the people involved are not our students.

“There was an influx of people on the campus due to the activities and unfortunately some miscreants in the environment took undue advantage of the event to attack their opponents.

“The college management, therefore, suspended the event with immediate effect because of the sad development that involved shooting but the good news is that the perpetrator has been arrested and at present at the Sabo Police Station, Yaba,“ Ejiofor said.

Recall our earlier story that Suspected cultists shot dead a student of the on the premises of the school on Wednesday.

This came in the mid of the students’ week celebration of the school, resulting in tension all around the campus.

A student, who spoke to Punch anonymously on the matter, said the person that was killed was a cultist, adding that the victim’s death was connected to the ongoing cult clash that began in July.

“The incident happened on Wednesday. The killing is connected to the recent cult clash going on in the school. We are tired; Yabatech has been peaceful for several years until recently that these cult guys now take joy in killing themselves.”

The report also cited the institution’s Student Union President, Taiwo Ayomide, as confirming the killing, adding that cult-related clashes had been going on the campus for months.
