Scholarship Abroad: Parents Protest 16-Month Unpaid Allowances

The condition of Nigerian students on scholarship abroad has become so worrisome that their parents can no longer keep quiet about it.

The have decided to storm the streets in protest, calling on the government to live up to its obligations.

The parents, today, blocked the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding payment of outstanding allowances in respect of their children on scholarship abroad.

The represent children, whose scholarships came off bilateral education agreements and other scholarship schemes, and which have not been serviced for up to 16 months counting.

Protesters gathered at the ministry’s entrance, calling on the government to address the delays.

It will be recalled that recently, that the Federal Government, had, last May, cancelled the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship programme saying it was a waster of resources.

Hitherto, a number of Nigerians had been leveraging the initiative for studies in such countries as China, Russia, Morocco, Egypt Algeria, Hungary, and Serbia.

Nonetheless, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, had promised that the Nigerian government would continue to honour its obligations on those already on the programme.
