Jose Bordalas, Getafe boss has revealed that Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham advised Mason Greenwood to head for Spain when leaving Manchester United.

At the conclusion of the summer transfer window, the 21-year-old forward was permitted to leave Old Trafford. After a protracted internal probe, it was determined that Greenwood had no immediate future in Manchester.

Despite having links to teams in Italy, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, he ultimately decided to sign a season-long contract with Getafe.

Bellingham, a player for England, was already in La Liga at the time after moving for his own €103 million (£88 million/$110 million) to Santiago Bernabeu, and he reportedly urged that Greenwood take a similar route.

Bordalas has told Radio Marca: “Greenwood is friends with Bellingham, and he advised him to come to the Spanish league.”

Since his arrest on allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control in January 2022, Greenwood hasn’t played for United.

In February 2023, those charges were dismissed, enabling him to get back to work.

Bordalas added on acquiring the player, who has 22 Premier League goals to his name: “It was a surprise, we never thought we could get a player like that.

“But they got in touch with our sporting director (Ruben Reyes), we talked, we didn’t think it could happen but both sides made an effort [financially].”

Greenwood has been positively embraced by Getafe fans and might make his team’s debut right away when they play Osasuna on Sunday.

Bordalas remarked about a youngster he has referred to as the “Golden Boy”: “He is a wonderful talent. He is somewhat lacking in match fitness and sharpness. He hasn’t played in a year and a half, so you must be cool and patient.

“We and his colleagues are helping him. He is integrating in a sensational way and I hope he can help us.”
