PSG Boss Gives Mbappe ‘Dangerous’ Instruction Against Dortmund

In preparation for PSG’s Champions League semi-final second leg on Tuesday, Luis Enrique has disclosed the tactical advice he will give Kylian Mbappe.

Enrique has stated that, even though it is anticipated that PSG will defend as a unit—”Even the world stars have to help defend”—he still wants Mbappe to stay high up the pitch when the French powerhouses are in possession to maximise his potential to cause Borussia Dortmund the most damage when it matters most.

Mbappe’s impact on PSG was modest in the first leg as Dortmund pinned him down. He was too much of a peripheral player and could only get on the ball in deeper areas, however he did hit the inner post with agony once.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Enrique said: “I don’t want the striker to go for the ball in midfield, I want the striker to touch the ball in critical areas and that’s difficult. I know you really want to talk about Kylian and I’m used to talking about Kylian. As an objective, we want to find our best players. Obviously our opponents are not going to leave him free at the penalty spot, they are going to let him touch the ball in midfield. I want him to go and touch it where he is dangerous.”

PSG can now focus exclusively on making it back to their second Champions League final overall, given they have already secured the Ligue 1 championship for this season. On Tuesday, they will play the second leg in Paris, although they are behind Dortmund by an aggregate score of 1-0. If they win, they would play in two finals in one week, first against Lyon in the 2024 Coupe de France final on May 25, seven days before the Champions League final at Wembley.
