Protest Rocks Ibadan As Youths Demand EFCC Scrapped

Hundreds of youths on Thursday staged a protest In Ibadan, calling for the scrapping of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The teenagers protested in front of the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, and voiced their unhappiness with the anti-graft agency’s behavior, claiming that its actions have always been an assault on defenseless youths.

Along with carrying placards and singing songs of unity, the teenagers arrived at the Secretariat facade in a convoy of around 20 vehicles decorated with different banners.

They blocked access to the secretariat, leaving guests and other people detained there for several hours.

The protest also led to heavy traffic gridlock along Bodija, Parliament Road and Total Garden roads among other areas in the axis.

Some of the young people, who were in their 20s and 30s, accused the EFCC of making illegal arrests and house searches during operations and demanded a review and reform of the agency’s operations.

Samuel, one of the demonstrators, claimed that they are fighting against the EFCC’s indiscriminate arrest policy because the agency frequently accuses them of being fraudsters.

Samuel, who identified himself as an engineer who is also involved in real estate, bemoaned the fact that EFCC agents have repeatedly targeted him and accused him of engaging in fraud.

He said: “We are not asking them not to do their job but they should do it according to the law. They burst people, collect their phones and search it through. What kind of thing is that?”
