#Powerofsport – AFGRAS Takes Sports Devt Message To Ogun, Ondo

AFGRAS Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) on grassroots sports development is taking the message to more communities and schools.

 The latest move saw AFGRAS, acronym for Advocates For Grassroots Sports visiting Ogun and Ondo communities in short spaces of time just to spread the message of the power of sports.

AFGRAS National Coordinator,  Mr Jonathan Opara who interacted with our correspondent on the initiative, said it was in line with the vision of the organisation to create  a platform for the grassroots and also help discover new talents.

The Eagle investigation shows that the schools visited, included the Navy Secondary School Imeri, which boasts of sufficient sporting facilities but which had remained under-utilised.

The Coordinator was accompanied in the trip by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AFGRAS, Mr Bob Olukoya Esq, and Senator Olabode Olajumoke.

A major highlight was the positive response of some schools in sending representatives to be groomed in different sports, especially Chess and Scrabble, for the upcoming Ago Iwoye Day celebrations.

Eight schools sent in their representatives who would slug it out in sports contests during the festival, the inclusion of sports being another mark of the efforts of Opara.

The meeting also created opportunity for a meeting with Hon Olabode Ayorinde, the Pro-Chancellor of the Achievers University in Ondo

The Coordinator expressed delight that the essence of the visit – being to incorporate sports in the festival was achieved, saying that was one of the best ways to harness the abundant opportunities in human talent existing in the country.

He expressed deep appreciation to the chairman of the Board of Trustees for  his unwavering support saying that Nigerian sports needed such committed individuals to achieve set targets.

He also pledged to continue the good work of not only discovering talents but also helping to prepare them for national and global stages.

According to Opara, the whole essence of his efforts is to ensure the exposition of talents so that they could become useful to themselves and also attract value to the country.
