Portugal Boss Offers Cancelo Update Amid Reported Heart Problem Check
Amidst rumours that Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo is being examined for a possible cardiac ailment, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has provided an update.
Cancelo unexpectedly missed Barcelona’s 3-0 La Liga victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday. According to RAC1, the defender was left off the team as a “precaution” and per “medical advice”. The report says, Barca “want to rule out” the chance that Cancelo has a cardiac ailment because one of his relatives has been diagnosed with one. Cancelo, who is a member of Martinez’s Portugal team for friendlies during the international break, has now provided an update.

He told a press conference: “We need to look natural. The noise is not a right noise. We are working, Cancelo is on the list for the second game, we are working on how to monitor the players as we do, we work with the club like Barcelona, but now there is no reason to be alert.”
News of a potential heart condition is obviously of great concern and the hope will be that Cancelo is given the all clear as soon as possible. Martinez certainly seems to be optimistic that the defender, who is a key player for club and country, will be able to join up with the squad over the international break as he finalises preparations for Euro 2024.
Cancelo and several other stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo, have already been ruled out of Portugal’s opening friendly against Sweden on Thursday. Martinez is ready for his big stars to take a break after yet another hectic season. Tuesday’s match pits Portugal against Slovenia; however, it is unclear if the Manchester City loanee will play.
