The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has spoken on the circumstances that led to the death of a couple being chased by louts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

It identified the man as Emeka Ehekweme, adding that the incident occurred on Nnamdi Azikiwe Way at Mabushi, on Wednesday afternoon.

FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh said in a statement on Thursday thus: “Preliminary findings indicate that a grey Toyota Highlander, registration number ABJ 206 EC, driven by one Emeka Ehekweme with his wife, was accosted by three unidentified suspects who forcefully entered the vehicle near Berger Junction, Utako.

“In the ensuing struggle for control of the steering, the vehicle lost control, struck another parked Mazda vehicle and somersaulted into a bridge pillar.

“The Highlander’s driver, his wife, and two of the assailants were confirmed dead on arrival at the National Hospital, while a third suspect is currently receiving treatment.

“The Mazda driver, one Suleman Mohammed, sustained no life-threatening injuries.”

According to the police, investigation into the circumstances of the incident was underway, even as it promised thoroughness.

While commiserating with the families of the deceased, it confirmed the death of two miscreants, who started the confrontation that led to the death of the couple.

As unfortunate as the death of the couple, it has again, underscored the need for, not just a legislation but strict enforcement against the activities of touts on the streets.
