Police Hunts For Man Over Baby “Crying Too Much And Disgracing” Him

A man has allegedly damaged his two year old baby’s arm for crying too much and disgracing him, moments the toddler was left in his care.

He now risks being reined in by the police following pressures by the National Human Right Commission, NHRC, and the Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ.

31-year-old, Mr Confidence Amatobi, from Amurie in the Isu local government area of the state, reportedly used plastic hanger to damage the right arm of his 2-year-old boy, a miracle, according to report monitored from Vanguard.

The suspect is already on the run, but he is reportedly said the baby was allegedly crying too much and distracting him, making him to attack him, an attack that has landed the two year old at the Pediatrics Ward of the Federal Medical Centre,(FMC) located in Owerri.

The state chairman of NAWOJ, Dorothy Nnaji, alleged that gave the name of the suspect as Mr Confidence Amatobi, native of Amurie in Isu L.G.A.

According to reports, the attack happened after the baby’s mother left to answer the call of nature, leaving her husband to look after the child. 20-year-old mother left to ease herself.

He reportedly used wood and elastic bands to tie the baby’s hand when he saw that his hand was broken and swollen.

“He locked the mother and baby to prevent her from talking to neighbours or seeking help. He also took her phone from her. After two days she found her way out and sought help from her neighbours. The guy was arrested by a vigilante but he escaped. By the time help came, the baby’s hand was already decayed. The only option was to cut off baby Miracle’s right hand.”

Last June, the Imo State Police Command arrested parents of three children, for allegedly abusing the three children in the World Bank Housing Estate, New Owerri.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Michael Abattam, who confirmed the arrest to journalists, said it followed reports of “abuse and slavery” from a Good Samaritan residing at the estate.

Imo State, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, incharge of New Owerri Divisional Police Headquarters, Owerri, Imo State, swiftly mobilized a team of policemen, including the officer incharge of Juvenile Welfare Centre, JWC, to the scene at World Bank area.

The Eagle reports that there has been increasing incidences of abuse of children in the recent.

In fact, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), published by the National Bureau of Statistics said that there had been an increase in violence against children in Nigeria increased by 5% between 2016 and 2021.

According to it, 90% of children between the ages of 1 to 14 have experienced at least one form of violent discipline by caregivers in 2021 as against 85% in 2016.

In Cross River and Imo states accounted for the highest forms of the abuse, reaching as much as 99%, compared to Sokoto State which recorded the lowest rate at 62%.
