PHOTOS: 3 Years After Court Sentences BRT Driver Over Fashion Designer’s Death

 3 years after, a Lagos State High Court today sentenced a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) driver to death by hanging for killing Bamise Ayanwola, a 22-year-old fashion designer.

The Lagos State Government , had on March 2022, arraigned 47 year old Andrew Ominikoron, on four counts charge of alleged rape, conspiracy sexual assault and murder of Ayanwola.

According to the charge, the murder occurred on February 26, 2022, at about 7pm near the Lekki-Ajah Conservation Expressway, Lagos.

The prosecution told the court that on that day, Ominikoron conspired with others now at large and forcefully had sexual intercourse with Bamise after which he murdered her.

Her body was discovered nine days later on Carter Bridge, Lagos Island.

He was also accused of sexual assault of Dr. Anosike Victoria and the rape of one Maryland Ojiezelu, charges to which he pleaded not guilty to.

The offences contravened Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

During the trial, the State called 11 witnesses who testified against the convict.

Ominikoron, who was led in his defence by his counsel Abayomi Omotubora, opened his defence on October 17, 2024, denied raping nor killing Oluwabamise.

The prosecution said Ominikoron conspired with others now at large and forcefully had sexual intercourse with Bamise after which he murdered her. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence.

According to him, one of the male passengers was coming forward, and he thought it was to pay him, but then the passenger threw something at his head and showed him a gun, asking him to cooperate.

The court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS), after reviewing all the submissions, passed a death sentence on the BRT Driver today.

Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Sonaike ruled that the Lagos State Government, which prosecuted the case, had successfully proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you,” the judge declared in her pronouncement.
