People Run For Dear Lives As Explosion Rock Armoury

Many people ran for dear lives yesterday as fire and explosions from an armoury rocked the neigbourhood.

The armoury is believed to be that of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) headquarters, a report in Ghanaian Times said.

As people ran for dear lives, a reporter who rushed to the location witnessed frantic efforts by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) as well as other sympathisers to put out the fire.

Smell of tear gas filled the atmosphere, while police personnel at the three-storey of the National Op­erations Department of the GPS evacuated the building, bringing work to a halt, and auxiliary staff were sighted mopping water from the corridor after the fire extin­guished.

The report quotes the acting National operations officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade One ((DO1) Joseph Kofi Forson, told the Ghanaian Times that the Service was able to put out the fire in a space of about 26 minutes..

According to him, three fire tenders from the GNFS and the Jubilee Staff House were deployed to bring the inferno under control even as investigation has commenced into the cause of the fire.

The Eagle reports that the Easter Region of Ghana has said it recorded 23 fire accidents within the first week of year 2023.

On last December 25 alone, forty-four fire outbreaks were recorded nationwide, the Ghana National Fire Service says.

According to the service, 19 of the fire accidents were domestic, while nine were commercial.

On the other hand, nine of such incidents were commercial, eight bushfires, five vehicular, and two electrical installation fires.

The service gave these details in a statement, with the highest fire incidents – nineteen being domestic.
