Ikwechegh: Docked Earlier Today And Later Granted Bail For N500, 000

Our report that the case of Hon Alex Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member who assaulted a bolt driver, may have gone from bad to worse, has been confirmed

Hon Alex Ikwechegh representing Aba South/Aba North Federal Constituency was docked earlier today and later granted bail for N500, 000.

This is a follow-up to his arrest and questioning on Monday after he assaulted a bolt driver, Mr Stephen Abuwatseya.

Ikwechegh’s docking before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Kuje for allegedly assaulting the bolt driver during an incident at his Abuja residence, thus allayed our report on the matter.

He was charged for abuse of office, assault, and threat to life, charges to which he pleaded not guilty to, with the prosecution counsel, Mr. A. Umar, applying for a date for a formal commencement of hearing on the case.

He contended that the offences for which he was being charged were bailable offences, reminding the court also of his right to presumption of innocence until proven guilty as provided for in 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

He was thus granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum.

However, those sureties must reside within Abuja, and also provide their utility bills as proof of residence.

The case was subsequently adjourned to November 8 for trial.
