‘Our Men Did Not Invade School Of Health Science’

The Federal Fire Service has risen up in strong defence of its men, saying they never invaded the School of Health Science and Technology, in Ijero Ekiti.

Instead, it said it duly notified the authorities of the school, of the need for staff and students to vacate, before moving in to decontamination the premises.

The Federal Fire Service made this clarification via a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.

Signed by its Spokesperson, Mrs Ugo Huan, the service held it followed its service protocols.

The Fire Service said its men had visited the School on Wednesday to carry out its duty, but that it was forced to suspend the exercise when some students reportedly started reacting adversely to the chemicals.

The Eagle understands that the development led to two students being hospitalised.

“We have  read with great dismay reports going round in some sections of the Media that the Covid-19 Response Team of the Federal Fire Service invaded the School of Health Science and Technology, Ijero Ekiti without the permission of the school authority”.

She said instead, a letter was sent to the school on May 14, notifying them that the Federal Fire Service Covid – 19 Response Team in the State was to carry out decontamination exercise in the school.

According to her, the letter equally stated the need for students and staff to vacate the premise for a period  of 30 minutes that the decontamination will last for.

“The letter was acknowledged by the school and permission was also granted.

“The COVID-19 Desk Officer called the registrar of the Institution on the day the team was to visit the school to inform him of their coming to which permission was also granted by the Registrar.

“ Trouble started 15 minutes after the decontamination exercise started with reports that some students had collapsed due to the adverse effect of the decontamination exercise.

“Our men immediately stopped the decontamination, but by then the students came attacking our men almost lynching them, it took the intervention of the school security who took them to the registrar’s office and later whisked them away by armed police officers,” she said.

“The Service sympathises with the two students of the institution who are presently receiving treatment at the hospital as a result of this unfortunate incident and we wish them quick recovery.

“The Service whose mandate is to save lives and property will never intentionally or unprofessionally do anything that will affect the health or lives of Nigerians, the statement said.
