Osasuna Face Tough Sanctions Over Fans’ ‘Greenwood, Die’ Chants On Getafe Debut

Following ‘death’ chants directed towards Mason Greenwood during his Getafe debut, Osasuna are apparently facing sanctions from La Liga.

The Manchester United loanee was abused by some of the visiting fans after coming off the bench in the second half of their 3-2 victory over Osasuna on Sunday.

According to The Athletic, a “Greenwood, die” chant was heard by La Liga’s official match observer. A legal and disciplinary procedure will now be followed.

Osasuna coach Jogoba Arrasate responded to a question from the media regarding this by saying: “The chants of ‘F*ck Osasuna’ and ‘F*ck Greenwood’ were really nasty.

“He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say. He is a very good player. But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some.”

Greenwood later contributed to the winning score by having his effort stopped and deflected for a corner, from which Nemanja Maksimovic scored to make it 3-2.

Since the forward’s suspension by the Red Devils in January 2022—following his arrest on accusations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control—this was the first time he had participated in a competitive match of football.

Those allegations were dropped in February 2023, but United advised him to move on to new opportunities to advance his career after a protracted international inquiry came to a close.

On September 1, Greenwood later joined Getafe on loan for the entire season. The next La Liga matchup for Jose Bordalas’ team is against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
