Official Reveals Cause Of Boat Mishap That Claimed 7 Lives

Official of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has given reason for the recent boat mishap in Ipakode area of Ikorodu which led to the death of 7 people.

The official, is none other than LASEMA) Director-General, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who spoke at the conclusion of investigations into the cause of the boat accident which involved 14 males and seven females.

He said the accident happened because of a violation of night travel restrictions put in place by the authorities to safeguard lives and property.

Recall that the accident happened at about 8 pm shortly after the boat left Ebute-Ero for Ikorodu against the state government’s directive that no boat should embark on a night journey.

Unfortunately, trouble started for the occupants shortly after takeoff, as it threw all passengers into the lagoon.

Though 10 of the passengers were rescued alive immediately, two were recovered dead and others still missing

The report said that four female were recovered on July 3, when the boat incident happened, two female each were also recovered on July 4 and July 5

Oke-Osanyintolu who spoke during the conclusion of the search and rescue operation alongside Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) dive team, at Ipadoko Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu.

He said the operations, started under extremely challenging nightfall conditions, after the incident had happened around 8 p.m. on July 3.

He however reminded the public to abide by the safety regulations of the state, including appropriate usage of life jackets and restrictions on timing and plying of the waterways.

19 passengers and two crew members were aboard the capsised boat, four females were recovered on July 3, when the incident happened, two females each were also recovered on July 4 and July 5.
