Officials of the National Identify Management Commission (NIMC) were highhanded at their Secretariat, Ikeja, Lagos office this morning, beating enrollees and slamming their gates against them.

They particularly dealt with a young in neat orange caftan, clubbing and slamming him, and then shoving him alongside others around their premises

The enrollees’ offence was demanding to be attended to, having spent as much as 4hours waiting, in the long and chaotic queue, and having put down their names on a long list provided by the NIMC officials.

Some of them had arrived the Secretariat, Ikeja premises of the commission as early as 4am but saw their patience wear out at about 8am when nothing seemed to be happening.

Instead, several occupied vehicles purportedly driven by staffers of the commission, kept coming in and leaving the premises, with some people alleging that those vehicles were actually being used to ferry enrollees who had settled officials of either the NIMC or National Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), beforehand.

 The impression spread fast, coupled with the long waiting, and when the people began desperate attempts to enter the premises, the NSCDC officials responded viciously, kicking, slamming and slapping.

The young man dressed in orange caftan was among those with bitter tales to tell, as he reportedly received several hits from the enraged security men.

The Eagle correspondent who was at the scene was told by a lady that the young man’s offence was attempting to video the confrontation.

They eventually lured him into the compound, the gates locked  behind him, and some people were saying the ploy was to seize his camera and deal with him afterwards.

“They really dealt with the man. Not only him, several others who were near the gate had bruises on their bodies from the clubs wielded by the security at the gate” narrated a young lady who gave her name as Itunju.

Up till that time, there weren’t tangible efforts by the NIMC officials to adequately address the huge crowd which kept increasing by the minutes.

Instead, the NSCDC operatives by the gates were still threatening to deal anyone trying to mess up with them.

At a point, when an NIMC officials, whom some of the enrollees identified as Segun wanted to start calling names, he was shouted down, to first address the people as to the procedure they wanted to use.

Some who had before then been given slips, with promise of being attended to first, shouted and shouted for attention.

However, a dark, hefty NSCDC female official, identified as O.B Johnson took time trying to appeal to the enraged crowd to maintain some patience, adding that they would soon be attended to, so long they would remain orderly.

Many of the enraged enrollees were bitter that an exercise intended to properly identify Nigerians could so badly be managed. some were also cursing the authorities.
