Nigerians Are Angry Over Escalating Naira Shortage, Fuel Scarcity

Nigerians are angry over escalating shortage in both fuel and the naira, a situation report from across the states has shown.

Whereas fuel scarcity has become a common yet frustrating experience, the issue of Naira shortage has been relatively recent, following a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to redesign the currency.

But the twin issues, have exposed Nigerians to untold hardship in the recent.

The video of an unidentified woman who went naked before a leading commercial bank had been in circulation in the last few days.

After several futile attempts to access her money from the said bank, the woman went literally berserk, striping and protesting.

“Close my account; I don’t want it again. Return my money. My children didn’t go to school yesterday. They will go today,” she lamented.

Most residents have been through untold hardship to access their accounts in the banks, thus proving opportunity for Point of Service (POS) operators to hike their service charges.

An entrepreneur Christian Awazieama told our correspondent in Ogba Lagos, that he was charged N2, 000 for a N10, 000 withdrawal from a POS.

Mrs Janet John, who operates a provision retail outlet at the Ishaga market lamented that business had been dull, with most customers complaining of cash shortage.

The new is still trending of how some students of the University of Benin, descended on a soldier who broke the queue for use of Automatic Teller Machine (ATM).

Though there differing details, the story centred on frustrations and desperations trying to withdraw money.

The university authority while reacting to the incident, has said:

“The unfortunate incident of the clash between some students and soldiers on Thursday, Feb. 2, resulting from alleged resistance of students to the soldiers’ attempt to jump ATM queues on campus has been brought under control.

“Management of the university is in discussions with the hierarchy of the army in Benin (the Supply and Transport) for amicable resolution”.

Almost stating the obvious, a Yoruba Sociocultural Group, Yoruba Ronu, lamented the whole suffering scenario in the country, asserting that most Nigerians were not happy over the lingering scarcity of petrol and new naira notes.

The group which spoke through its chairman, Prince Diran Iyantan, some Nigerians were in a state of despondency due to poor living conditions.

Feelers from other sections of the country show truly that Nigerians are angry over the state of things, with most blaming the rulership and others stating their readiness to exit the country.
