Nigeria Reinforce Security After US, UK ‘Terror Alert’
In light of the travel warnings from the United States and the United Kingdom, President Muhammadu Buhari has encouraged Nigerians to maintain their composure and exercise caution.
This was said in a statement released on Friday and signed by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.
According to the statement, Buhari remarked that security personnel are actively looking for risks to citizens’ safety notwithstanding his claim that Nigerians’ safety remains the government’s top priority.
The President expressed confidence that the country would prevail over its current problems given the continuous efforts of the military and other security and intelligence institutions as well as the active support of the civilian population.
According to him; “Nigeria is no exception in having terror threats listed in foreign government’s travel advice to their citizens. UK and US travel advisories also state there is a high likelihood of terror attacks in many Western European nations. Indeed, the UK and US advice to their respective citizens for travel to one another’s countries contain the same warning. Unfortunately, terror is a reality all over the world.

“However, it does not mean an attack in Abuja is imminent. Since the July prison raid, security measures have been reinforced in and around the FCT.
“Heightened monitoring and interception of terrorist communications ensure potential threats are caught further upstream. Attacks are being foiled. Security agents are proactively rooting out threats to keep citizens safe – much of their work unseen and necessarily confidential.
“Nigerians’ safety remains the highest priority of the government. Security services are working around the clock to keep harm at bay.”
The President emphasized the need for responsible members of society to be security vigilant, alert, and careful while also taking care to avoid creating circumstances that might cause unnecessarily heightened anxiety.
He praised the military and other security agencies for the recent improvement in the security of the country and ordered that more safety precautions be taken both now and during the upcoming holiday season.
