New Year Eve Boat Mishap Claims 6 Lives, Families In Sorrow
It is New Year Eve but a boat mishap may have drained from some Nigerian families, the opportunity of celebrating it.
The families have just lost six of their members even while four were luckily rescued from the accident which occurred along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos.
The incident which occurred late Tuesday evening involved a Savvy Marine passenger boat at approximately 8:35 pm, along the axis on that fateful day.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have confirmed the unfortunate incident in a joint statement.
The statement signed by NIWA, Head, Public Affairs Unit, Wuraola Alake and Head Corporate Affairs Unit, LASWA, Omowunmi Yussuff, said the boat was en route from Ilashe Beach House at the time of the incident.

“As of the time of this report, four passengers have been successfully rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
“Sadly, six other passengers were recovered dead at the scene while Search and rescue operations remain ongoing to account for all persons involve,” NIWA/ LASWA stated.
The Eagle reports that another New Year eve tragedy has been recorded in Yobe State where one person lost his life and no fewer than 87 others receiving injuries following a ghastly road accident.
The accident which involved a trailer along the Potiskum–Azare Road occurred at about 2pm on Wednesday at the Potiskum entrance roundabout.
The trailer which was conveying passengers to the popular Potiskum cattle market reportedly lost control and overturned.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Yobe State Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, while confirming the accident, promised thorough investigation.
