NASS Invasion: UK Govt Says It Is Monitoring Devts

Short of an outright condemnation , the British Government has said it was monitoring developments, following Tuesday’s invasion of the National Assembly by security personnel.

Speaking through the British High Commission in Nigeria, it said it was was monitoring the situation at the National Assembly and other political developments ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The statement sighed by Mr. Joe Abuku, and made available to newsmen, said the British government would  continue to support only the rule of law and democratic ethos.

The statement read, “We are aware of media reports of a situation at the National Assembly this morning. We are closely monitoring the situation and other political developments in Nigeria.  The United Kingdom supports a process whereby the people of Nigeria can exercise their democratic rights to vote and be voted for. We favour a free, fair, credible and peaceful process and the independence of institutions, which allow for that.”

Nigeria gained her independence from Britain in 1960 and had since maintained a robust relationship with teh Britisih government.

This has manifested in amongst others, mutually beneficial trade and investment relationships, with many citizens of both countries freely living and doing business in either Britain or Nigeria.
