N3million is not small as a prize money no matter the competition, but that is what the Kaduna state government is putting on the table.
Approximately $10, 000, the state’s Commissioner for Sports Development Professor Kabir Mato has said it would be taken home by the top winner at the maiden Kaduna Marathon, tagged, “Kaduna Runs”.
Already, the half-marathon scheduled for Saturday, 21, November 2020, is drawing attention to the state, showing partly, the important of sports in development.
The Eagle understands that the half-marathon, is designed as an annual sporting event, creating options for talent development, drawing mass participation, inviting visitors to the state and creating economic benefits.
With N3million prize money, the level of participation is expected to be high.
“Our hope is that it will also help reinforce Kaduna’s hard-earned reputation as an investment hub. As a fixture on the sporting and social calendars, Kaduna Runs will also attract interested persons to visit our state.
“The elite athletes winner gets $10,000 but you know in marathon, the first ten are givien prizes the number ten is expected to go with $1,000 for both male and female categories.
“For the local participants, N3million for both male and female first finishers and the tenth gets N350,000,” he said, adding that the organisers were penciling down 20 elite runners internationally for invitation.
“The forms are online so whoever is interested can fill it online,” he added.
According to the commissioner, the Kaduna state government took the initiative of creating the marathon to engage sports men and also to draw attention to the state, adding that creating the Ministry of Sports Development, has helped the state to carve a niche.
Besides, with about 75 per cent of Kaduna population below 35 years, the competition would readily draw the attention and participation of the able bodied in the state.
Mato stressed that the Governor is poised to producing and reproducing sportsmen and women that will make Nigeria proud and Kaduna greater in sports.
He said the need informed the maiden Kaduna Marathon which is to compete with others held internationally by standards.
