My God, What Kind OF A Neighborhood IS This?

By Oke Kofoworola Durotimi
My God – The kind of things you see in Lagos and its neighbouring state of Ogun, sometimes, make you wonder, whether they are meant for human habitation.
If you have been areas like Ibafo, Olambe or Ajuwon all Ogun oustkiert neigbourhoods, you probably would understand better.
Here however, the focus is Akute, also an Ogun State neighbourhood, which is close to Ojodu Lagos.
In which aspects should one begin to compare Akute, this thickly populated area?
When it comes to roads, Akute is not where to be found, as it lacks good roads. There are a lot of places close to Akute with bad roads; places like Lambe, Pipeline, Fashakin, Matogun, Sango to mention some, yet the bad nature of Akute roads are not comparable.
The roads are not just not motorable, making it difficult for vehicles to move with ease. During rainy season, the roads are always flooded and messy, in addition to traffic go-slows, causing regular and rampant breakdown of vehicles. Aside that, there is usually accidents.

During dry season, OMG! The air is just filled with dust which can be harmful to the health of people living in or coming to the area.
In terms of electricity supply, it is very poor in Akute. Electricity poles in some areas aren’t properly fixed, original cables are most times, not used in electrification, which causes regular explosion.
This is not to say that areas like Lambe, Matogun Sango fare far better. They hardly get two hours of regular electricity per day.
Even if you want to talk about the level of enlightenment, Akute is not as civilized as say, Ogba which makes some residents of this area behave abnormally and irresponsibly.
You see a lot of young kids on the roads and streets begging passersby, from tricycle riders (popularly known as Okada men) to pedestrians.
From observation, many residents here, have a different mentality to life. This makes one to remember the assertion that environment can affect one’s behavior. That is why they say Environment matters in the upbringing a child.
You can see this in the mode of communication and dressing; it is usually not pleasant. I will blame the area because it had fault in this.

Taking the Government attitude towards these places in Ogun state, I’d say it is poor. If I am to rate it, I would say 5%. The Government is inconsiderate of this area. That is why there are still bad roads, poor electricity supply, poor hygiene etc.

Road construction begins but never gets completed. And it is due to facts stated above, that big investors, big men tend to shun Akute, which in a way, actually reduces opportunities available to the residents.
