MTN Kicks Off 5G Internet Services In Nigeria

Leading telecommunications company MTN has commenced operations with its 5G internet service across the country.

This comes eight months after MTN won the 3.5GHz spectrum license alongside Mafab Communications for the rollout of the 5G network.

Mafab Communications, the other 5G license winner, has been handed a five-month extension for the service’s implementation in Nigeria.

According to Mafab, the licenses were expected to start the implementation of 5G services starting from August 24, 2022, in accordance with the stipulations of the 5G licence. However, due to delays in getting its UASL and Numbering plan, which was not until the end of July, Mafab has been given a five-month extension.

Chairman Mafab Communications Limited, Dr. Mushabu Bashir said, “We are fully committed to bringing the benefits of 5G services to Nigerians and deploying a network that will drive economic development with increased broadband capabilities nationwide. I have no doubt that the service will help deliver improvements in the fields of education, business, smart cities and entertainment.”

The MTN 5G service launched its operations at one hundred and ninety sites across the country but mainly in Lagos and Abuja, and it is anticipated to be operational at 500–600 locations nationwide by the end of October.

Due to the fact that not all devices can access 5G networks, MTN has urged telecom customers to start pre-ordering their 5G devices in order to take advantage of the fast internet download speeds and low latency that are associated with 5G.
