Minimum wage

The Ogun State gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo has reiterated his support for a minimum wage of N200, 000 per month for Nigerian workers.

Ajadi said a minimum wage N200, 000 had become inevitable, given the skyrocking prices of goods and services in the country.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to consider prompt implementation of such a wage as a priority, not only ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerian workers, but also to show he is touched by their challenges.

Now that he had become president, Ajadi said Tinubu’s priority should be the welfare of Nigerians, of which workers form a major bulk.

He maintained that the improved livelihood for Nigerians is sacrosanct and must remain a top priority of Tinubu’s administration, with more people-focused economic policies to reflect the current realities in the country.

Ajadi who referenced with the proposed increase by 114% in the salaries of elected political office-holders, including the President, vice president, governors, lawmakers, as well as judicial and public servants, by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), said what was good for the goose was also good for the gander.

Though, the RMAFC had said that the 114% was just a proposal, Ajadi maintained that there was nothing wrong for a similar proposal for Nigerian workers.

According to him, more than ever before, the ordinary Nigerian, was struggling with harsh economic realities with about 120 million of them living in poverty, and that any government worth the name should be concerned.

Referencing with the minimum wage Canada, us minimum wage, minimum wage and America,   Ajado said whatever should be paid Nigerian workers currently, should be commensurate with the realties on ground so that workers could give their best.

He urged the President and the 36 state governors to work together on how to assuage the plight of Nigerian workers and ordinary citizens.

“There is need for President Tinubu and governors to do some calculations and soul searching on the minimum wage to reflect the current realities in the country, by increasing the take home of workers.

“Since the pump price of fuel has gone up, it is only expected that the salary of workers be upwardly adjusted to enable them cope with all round increase in the prices of goods and services.

“Therefore, all elected leaders should justify the confidence reposed on them by the voters by doing something to help the masses facing challenges in the country.

“I reiterate my appeal to our President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the 36 state governors to make the welfare of workers and ordinary citizens, a priority by acceding to the 200 thousand naira minimum wage rather than increasing their own pay”, Ajadi maintained.
