Man Crashes Car Into Church of Mormon, Then Sets It Alight

 A chapel of the Church of Mormon is still dazed in fear and concern, after a gunman crashed into it, and proceeded to setting it on fire.

Though an earlier report said at least one person has been confirmed dead, and several others in critical condition in hospital in the attack on the Michigan-based church, but updated reports say at least four people were killed and eight others injured.

Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye had told journalists at a press conference yesterday that the man who was armed with an assault riffle, rammed his vehicle through the front door of the building of the Church of Mormon before opening fire.

Hundreds of people, including children, had gathered for a service at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Grand Blanc on Sunday morning before the gunman struck.

Reports indicated that the man could not get away with the act as he was gunned down by the police.

Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye gave the age of the man involved in the Church of Mormon incidents as 40, who hailed from nearby Burton, but his name was not given.

“Ten gunshot victims have been transported to local hospitals at this time including one who has been confirmed deceased”,  Renye reportedly said, adding:

“We do believe we will find additional victims once the scene has been secured”.

The gunman he added was overpowered during a shootout involving two officers, one from the Department of Natural Resources and another from Grand Blanc Township.

According to the officer, authorities would execute a search warrant on the suspect’s home and also comb through cell phone records to ‘find out if there was a motive,’ Renye said.

Writing on social media, one witness said the church had been ‘completely destroyed’ by the blaze, and that they saw the shooter’s truck parked in front of the building, according to a report sighted on The Mail.

The Eagle reports the church as describing the attack as “a tragic act of violence”.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of prayers and concern from so many people around the world. In moments of sorrow and uncertainty, we find strength and comfort through our faith in Jesus Christ.

“Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved”, it added, in the release signed by Church Spokesperson, Doug Andersen.
