Lucky Youths Receive IFAD Money To Start Their Own Businesses

Some lucky youths of Bayelsa origin have received money from the International Fund For Agricultural Development (IFAD) to begin their own businesses.

The lucky youths, 148 in number were presented the working capital in Yenagoa, after undergoing training programme in agriculture.

The training held under the auspices of IFAD’s Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprise in Niger Delta (LIFE-ND), with a revolving loan and includes mentorship

Many of the youths were elated to be among the chosen and their cheques were handed over from Dr Paniebi Ugo, the State Project Coordinator of LIFE-ND to the master trainers keep.

The training is coming at a time of increasing ssconcern in the society on the sky-rocking prices of items, and also difficulty in getting employment.

Ugo who advised the trainee farmers to take the project seriously and make a living for themselves, listed cassava, plantain, fish and poultry as the commodities covered in Bayelsa.

According to him, the agriculture mentorship programme for youths had been on in the state two years and targets young people between the ages of 18 and 35.

He said the scheme provided working capital to enable the young farmers start up their own farms upon completion of their training.

“This cheque presentation is an epoch making event and a breakthrough for LIFE-ND, IFAD, and Bayelsa State.

“This programe has been going on for about two years and has two phases apprenticeship and mentorship.

“This is the third batch of incubatees. The template of the programme is that they are assigned into established farms where they will be trained and mentored and at the end of the training based on their enterprise”.

Ugo explained that working capital is a minimum of N700,000 per incubatee depending on the commodity, while he also charged the participants to take the project seriously as it was geared towards improving their livelihood.
