Lewandowski Issued Heavy Suspension After ‘Gesture’ Against Osasuna

Following his red card for Barcelona during their La Liga victory over Osasuna, Robert Lewandowski was given a three-match suspension.

Lewandowski received a red card after 30 minutes, while Gerard Pique, who was on the bench for his final game before retiring, was also dismissed for badgering officials just before halftime in Barcelona’s eventual 2-1 triumph away from Osasuna last week. Lewandowski was given a three-match suspension, while Pique, who has since left Camp Nou, was given a more severe four-match suspension.

According to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Lewandowski received two yellow cards, which carries a one-game suspension. The additional two games stem from his behavior toward officials, as he was seen making a gesture towards them.

Article 99 states that Pique was penalized for his “insults, verbal violations, and offensive attitudes.”

Lewandowski claimed he made a thumbs-up sign toward Xavi, the manager of Barcelona, when he was kicked out of the game. The RFEF has decided that this motion was actually directed towards officials, though. At halftime, Pique was seen pursuing the referee and pursuing him off the field as he made his decisions.

Pique won’t be concerned about the ban as he takes advantage of his early retirement. However, Lewandowski, a Polish international, will now miss matches against Espanyol, Atletico Madrid, and Real Betis after his World Cup trip.
