Lagos Begins Pre-Marital Counselling Course For Pastors, Imams

The Lagos State Government has introduced a novel pre-marital counselling course for pastors, imams and other counsellors in the state.

This was announced today in a statement by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.

The agency said the initiative was part of the state’s commitment to strengthening family foundations before marriages and preventing domestic violence.

The pre-marital counselling course is tenable online, with the government seeking to see less friction-full marriages.

According to the statement, “the programme has been designed to provide counsellors with structured knowledge that combines faith-based perspectives with modern relationship education, helping couples build strong partnerships rooted in communication, respect and accountability.

“Delivered through a flexible digital platform, the course enables counsellors to apply practical knowledge to real-life counselling scenarios,” the statement said.

Providing further justification, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi stated:

“Domestic violence does not begin in the courtroom.

“In many cases, it begins long before marriage. By strengthening the quality of pre-marital counselling within our faith institutions, we are helping couples build marriages founded on respect, safety and shared responsibility

“By partnering with faith institutions, we are strengthening marriages at their foundation and building communities where homes remain safe and supportive for everyone”, she said.

Participants who compete the pre-Marital counselling Course , would be issued a certificate and according to the DSVA, it is expected to complement the recently introduced Relationship Health Clinic, in the state, an innovative initiative by the agency that provides professional psychological support for individuals and couples using the evidence-based RELATE Protocol.

The Lagos State government hopes to use the newly introduced training and similar initiatives to reinforce its Zero Tolerance policy for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, while promoting healthy marriages and stable families across the state.
