The Royal Spanish Football Federation [RFEF] has eliminated Barcelona and Sevilla from the Copa de la Reina for fielding ineligible players.

Brazilian international Geyse, who was playing for Barcelona Femeni against Osasuna in the round of 16, scored in their crushing 9-0 victory.

However, the 24-year-old was ineligible to participate in the Osasuna match because she was dismissed from the competition last year while playing for her old team, Madrid CFF, in the quarterfinals.

Sevilla beat Villarreal 1-0 while adding Nagore Calderon to the lineup from the bench. The midfielder received a red card against UD Granadilla Tenerife in the quarterfinals of the previous campaign, and her suspension was carried over to the match against Villarreal in the round of 16 for 2022–23.

The RFEF has now officially announced that both clubs have been eliminated from the most recent Copa de la Reina, and Osasuna and Villarreal, respectively, will take their places.

Barcelona was also given a €1,000 fine in addition to the penalty. The sanctioned clubs have ten days to submit an appeal to the RFEF’s Appeals Committee against this decision. Barcelona will file an appeal, according to ESPN, because they maintain that Geyse’s suspension was not visible on the RFEF website or the internal system used by clubs to check sanctions.
