Jungle Justice: Killers Of Alleged Witch Land In Hot Soup

Be careful how you mete out jungle justice, no matter how right it seems, as that may land you on the wrong side of the law.

That is the clear moral for all those who allegedly took part in the killing of an alleged witch in Cross River; the government is now in hot pursuit of them.

They accused the woman, Mrs Martina Itagbor from Akamkpa Local Government Area of the State of witchcraft and also of being behind the death of several young people in her community.

Those they say included two brothers who died on their way back from Calabar from the inauguration of House of Assembly members.

However, the Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah has directed that they be tracked down, arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Irene Ugbo, made this known via a statement to journalists in Calabar today, saying:

“The issue of jungle justice is one crime that the Police does not take lightly and as such, we have already commenced manhunt for those responsible for the dastardly act.

“Those responsible, no matter how highly placed, will be arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of the land.”

“We are going to treat them like the criminals that they are, and no stone would be left unturned on this matter , they can only run , but won’t hide , enough is enough , jungle justice is not the solution.

“All those involved in the murder of Mrs Itagbor would be brought to book, and the law will take it’s full cause, we won’t relent until they are in our custody ,” CP Grimah said.

The Eagle reports that Cross River State is one of the states in the country where witchcraft allegations are rife.

Five persons, three women and two men were recently murdered in the state over the same allegation, prompting a coalition of human rights groups to appeal to the International community, the Federal and Cross River State Governments to ensure that the murderers were brought to book.

Recounting the incident, the Chairman of Trustees of Safe Child Africa, Mr. Gary Foxcroft, in a statement, said the tragic incident was triggered by a motorcycle accident that took place on the evening of October 13, in Ndon Nwong community in Odukpani Local Council of Cross River State.

Two children were tortured over the incident and forced to identify the witches behind the deaths.

According to the account, youths matched the alleged witches to the village square where they were tried by a kangaroo court made up of local chiefs and youth leaders.
