Iwobi To Quit Nigeria National Team After Fans Violation of Decency

Nigeria and Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi set to quit international football after the Super Eagles failed to win 2023 Afcon.

Iwobi, who have been a victim of cyber-bullying from fans played all seven matches as the Super Eagles finished second in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations which was won by hosts Ivory Coast.

However, a section of the fans felt the Fulham attacker was playing cautiously and did not give his best on the pitch.

In spite of his extensive experience with the national squad, Iwobi was unable to score or even assist during the biannual competition.

The Arsenal Academy graduate had to remove all of his photos and videos from his Instagram account after dejected supporters descended upon him and hurled insults at him on the platform following the final.

The 27-year-old is rumoured to be considering leaving the national squad, but no concrete information has been provided.

Nigeria captain Musa is unhappy with what has transpired and has strongly come out defending his Super Eagles teammate.

“I want to please urge you to halt the cyber-bullying directed towards Alex Iwobi. Cyberbullying is not just a violation of decency but also a serious crime. It’s hypocritical to claim that football unites us while engaging in such behaviour,” the 31-year-old attacker posted.

“Losing a game is undoubtedly tough, but targeting a single player for the team’s shortcomings is unfair and unjust. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. Alex gave his all on the field, just like every member of our squad.

“Instead of spreading negativity, let’s show genuine love and support to our players. They need our encouragement now more than ever. Let’s uplift each other and stand united, both in victory and defeat.”

It would be interesting to watch if Iwobi chooses to address the matter or to keep quiet completely in order to concentrate on his club duties.
