All criminal accusations against the England international, Mason Greenwood who was suspended by the Red Devils after his arrest in 2022, have been withdrawn.

Mason Greenwood, a forward for Manchester United, had criminal charges against him dropped in a case including claims of attempted rape, using coercive or controlling behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The 21-year-old was initially detained in January 2022 as a result of the accusations made against him. He was later released on bail and detained again as a result of a violation of the court’s ordered bail conditions.

The dismissal of all charges against Greenwood was announced by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on February 2, 2023.

Shortly after a series of social media tweets from a woman alleging to have been the target of abuse by the England international surfaced, Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United.

“Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice,” the Premier League team announced at the time.

Further, United made the decision to take any Greenwood-related items out of their club shop and online shops.

The allegations against the Bradford native have now been dismissed, which might mean that he will be permitted to resume his professional playing career.

On Thursday, United issued the following statement: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

Greenwood is, meanwhile, listed as part of the squad list on United’s official club website.

On January 22, 2022, Greenwood made his final appearance for United in a 1-0 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford.

His 129th overall game for the team saw him score 35 goals in that time.

At the age of just 17, Greenwood made his professional debut for the Red Devils in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain after graduating from Old Trafford’s renowned academy program.

In September 2020, he won his lone senior England cap against Iceland.

United must now determine whether or not Greenwood should be absorbed back into their plans.

In terms of whether he is actually permitted to play in the Premier League now that the January transfer window has closed, Greenwood is 21 years old and was born in October 2001, making him eligible to be considered a “Under-21 player” and exempt from being included in the 25-man roster.

According to Premier League rules: “Over and above the cap of 25 players per team, players under the age of 21 are eligible.

“Each player has a squad number that they represent while competing in Premier League games.

“For the 2022–2023 season Players under the age of 21 must have been born on or after January 1, 2001.”
