Is it possible to make it in Nigeria without a godfather? That is the big question that our correspondents took to the streets of Lagos in search of an answer. The responses are both interesting and instructive

Yes, it is possible if we have a better Nigeria. Yes, because things are changing. After the last #AntiSARS protests, we see a lot of things are happening so things are going to change. Our politicians are scared of the youth so definitely, I think that many things are going to change and people will start getting things without Godfathers.

It’s actually possible to make it in Nigeria without knowing anybody. It all depends on how you hustle for it.

                                                                                      Uju Sunday, Entrepreneur

In Nigeria now, things are turning upside down, it is only God that will intervene. in my own understanding, things are getting out of hand. To make it in this country without knowing anybody on the upper side or Godfather, it is only God that can make that to happen from my own point of view.

There are two ways to it. For instance, my kind of job as a tailor, if I sew for someone and he likes it, he could give me connection as an assistance. On the other hand, in order to make it bigger I would need a godfather. In my business now, most pictures I see online are someone else’s creation.

Had it been that I have a upper hand somewhere then it means I have someone through which I can get the job. So it’s in two ways: it has both advantage and disadvantage that you know someone on the big side or you can just grow on your own.

                                                                          Martins Sam, Fashion Designer

It is only God that can change the life of a human being. You may think that this country can change the life of people but it is only God that can do such. Without God nothing can be possible. Godfathers can not do anything as you can get one today then tomorrow he/she might disappoint you. So for me it is to live everything unto God.

Joseph Olumuyiwa, Businessman

I know I can make it without knowing somebody because it is people that will help you. Without somebody helping you or connecting you, you won’t be able to go far. Even the rich will first help their relations from their siblings to other members of their families as one can’t be rich and the family will be poor.

It is possible for one so be successful without knowing anyone if the person has God and believes in the lord Jesus Christ.

God is merciful, and if someone has God, where the person does not even expect abundance of blessings and mercy is where he/she will get it.

Ordinarily, it may be difficult to make it in Nigeria if someone does not have a godfather. One who is prayerful however can still be successful without a godfather. It is true therefore, that if one does not know anyone it won’t be easy to be successful in this country. Everything has to do with “connection” in Nigeria.

When you know you don’t have a godfather you just have to give value to yourself. You go out in the morning and make it a principle of making it every day, rather than just going out for nothing. Even the Bible says, make the most of every opportunity. So when you know you don’t have a godfather but God, you pray to God first and most importantly then whatever skill you have is now left for you to maximize it. There is always something inside of you that can provide solution to other people’s problem and the moment you can solve other people’s problem before you know it, you start making money without any godfather.

Rotimi Bankole

It is going to be very difficult to make it in this country without connection or without a godfather. Without connection you can’t make it, you can’t get a job. I am a B.sc holder, I studied Banking and Finance in the university and I am supposed to be working at the bank but because there was no connection, I am not. I have to have a connection; I need somebody to back me up, does that make sense?

It’s like that everywhere. So, without connection, the chances of getting a job in Nigeria is very slim. If you are an entrepreneur then it’s fine as you can start from a small capital, then from there God might help you or you might have someone in your family that will help you.

I believe entrepreneurship is better than seeking for a job. You see so many graduates searching for a job and when it comes to a lady they had to sleep with them one way or the other.  You can’t just walk into a firm and say you are seeking for employment and they give you even if your certificate is good.

But if you have a godfather or connection, it is very easy. There are some people, they have not even finished writing their final exams, a job is waiting for them just because they have backups.

Miss Rotomi Bankole, Entrepreneur

Before you can get a job for instance in Lagos State, you must know the Speaker, if not the Speaker you must know somebody to stand as a godfather for you through one connection or the other.

You cannot go there freely and say you want to get a job, it’s not easy it’s either by connection or godfather.
