Independence Celebrations – Nigerians Slam FG, List Way Forward

 Nigerians have continued to react to the state of affairs in the country against the background of the 59^th independent anniversary celebrations.

Those who responded to The Eagle correspondents ‘questions submitted that so much still needed to be done in the country to put it on the path of progressive development.

An engineer Kunle Onifade said the federal government had not done well in terms of road infrastructure appealing for a rehabilitation of the road network.

 He urged the government to provide power supply so that industries could thrive, adding ‘’There’s no country that has attained industrialisation without power or electricity’’.

According to him it is the lack of basic infrastructure that has been stopping foreign investors from coming into the country.

He also advised the government to invest more in agriculture especially in the area of mechanised farming.

He also added that government should provide subsidy for people going into farming so that there would be enough food in the country.

“The government at various levels have not been effective”, declared  Mrs Bolanle Olasehinde, a professional caterer and a confectioner.

She told our correspondents that there wasn’t enough food in the country and that the government should respond to this by opening up the borders.

 “The government thinks that the rice we have is enough for the people but the truth is that importing and exporting cannot be stopped, because that is where some are earning their living”.

Olasehinde advised the government to show the people compassion so that the  average citizen could  be able to feed.

“The government should put food on the table for common men to safe guild the lives of the people, and also improve the area of health facility in the hospitals”, she suggested.

According to her, there is also for it to strengthen security in the country.

a sfaff of the West African Examination Council (waec ), who simply identified himself as Mr Udoh, said there was no assurance of safety in the country again either by day or night saying that the government had failed woefully in that area.

He illustrated his point by citing a personal encounter with armed robbers recently while on his way from the office.

According to him, the robbers collected his phones and other valuables things from  him, adding that the fellows might have been forced into the act by the state of things in the country.

When people desire to have a means of livelihoold honestly and things prove difficult, they could resort to crime, he said.

Another respondent, Shina Itunnu a student of the Nigerian Institute of journalism (NIJ) lent his voice to the view that the situation in the county left much to be desired, urging the government to intensify the fight against terrorism and also provide jobs for the masses.

For Mr Adelana Oladipo, there is need to overhaul the machinery of governance int he country as there did not seem to be any currently.

He argued that the current state of things seemed to place the northern part of the country ahead of the other regions, urging for a balancing in the interest of mutual coexistence.

Oladipo added that Nigeria was  retrogression in the aspect of medicare, lamenting the fact that Nigerians still  go for medical treatment in Germany, India and others.

He equally expressed pessimism as to whether something positive would come out of the present complaints by well-meaning Nigerians.

A Photographer, Emmanuel Oloruntoba said the Government had failed in many Sectors, adding that he did not foresee any change in the nearest future.

The reason for his pessimism he added was the nature of the emergence of some of the political office holders and the longstanding practice of implementing personal rather than people-oriented agendas.

To that extent, the expectation and feelings of the people would not count, he added, advising Nigerian citizens to do what they felt was right and leave what they could not control.

 ‘’We should control the way we relate with others’’. If the Government loves their country they will cater for the people”, Oloruntoba.
