Imminent flood disaster: FG Takes Preparedness Campaigns To 30 States

Report of an imminent flood disaster in the country has forced the authorities to begin a sensitisation campaign across 30 states.

The 2025 flood awareness campaign is being undertaken by the Federal Government in readiness for rainy season and flooding.

The Eagle had, recently reported the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) listing areas likely to face risky flooding to include 1,249 communities across 176 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 33 states and the FCT fall within the high flood-risk areas in 2025.

It issued the warning during the official presentation of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, in Abuja.

States identified in the high-risk category include: Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Gombe and Imo.

Others which would face risky flooding are; Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

The imminent flood disaster warning is therefore aimed at sensitizing and preparing them for eventuality.

Reiterating the number of prone areas, the Deputy Director of the Department of Flood, Erosion Control and Coastal Management at the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Kunle Awojemila, has said: “We are starting the flood awareness sensitisation campaign in the first week of May.

“In the FCT, we will begin in Dutse, then move to areas like Lokogoma, Lugbe, and others, consequently.

“Other states will commence their awareness campaigns as well.”

As at yesterday, the Director General of National EmeNEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, emphasised the urgent need to enhance emergency preparedness at the grassroots level.

Umar who spoke through the Head of NEMA’s Ekiti Operations Office, Dr. Kofoworola Soleye, at Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital, underscored the importance of sensitization of residents.

“Flood disaster in recent times has claimed several lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira,” she said. “Despite ongoing response efforts, many communities remain unaware of basic preparedness measures and response strategies as regards flood disasters.”
