“Igbo Must Go”: Olusegun Obasanjo States Stand

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has stated his stand on the inflammatory assertion of “Igbo Must Go”, being peddled by some ethnic jingoists.

Chief Obasanjo made this known when he received in audience the leadership of Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, at the boardroom of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The group is an umbrella body of major markets in Lagos State, and reacting to such assertions, he declared: “we own this country together”, adding that he did not believe anybody in Nigeria should be driven away from any part of the country asserting that,

According to him, “Having ensured that the Yorubas, Igbos and Hausas all came together to fight the war of unity in Nigeria, and “not to fight Igbos to go, but to come. So if anybody says to me, that somebody should leave any place, he will be the one to leave.”

Away from the “Igbo Must Go”, issue, the elder statesman also used the opportunity to react to claim of his Igbo paternity, declaring that such insinuation made him laugh.

Reacting through a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo simply stated:  “it just makes me laugh.”

Providing a background to the visit, he said it was the initiative of the leadership of the group soliciting his support for the establishment of the Owerri Central Market.

Decrying that the market had not gone off the ground despite being contemplated since the creation of Imo state, he added “but, I am glad it is coming up again and I hope this time, we are all going to make it real. It is going to be big, the first of its kind.

“And, I am happy also that the governor is showing the desired interest and understanding. And, I am confident that the Owerri Central Market will be, as he expressed the desire to lead the marketing team for the market.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria’s respected statesmen, who despite holding the reins of power as both a military leader and an elected civilian president, has also held regional and international positions.
