I Regret Supporting Tinubu Against Atiku— Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed regret in openly working against his party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in favour of the candidacy of Senator Bola Tinubu.

The two were leading contenders in the 2023 presidential election but rather than lend his full support for his party’s candidate, Atiku to emerge victorious, Makinde as a member of the G5 did otherwise, backing Tinubu

The latter went ahead to emerge victorious, an outcome the Oyo State governor is now regretting.

Speaking with journalists at the Government House in Ibadan yesterday, he stated:

“I said it earlier, I’m human. I supported the current president, even though in another party at that time, because I thought we’ll do what is right for the country,” Makinde said.

“But unfortunately, that is not what we’re seeing. I regret that action. Yes, I do,” the governor stated.

It should be recalled that Makinde was a member of the G5, a coalition of five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, who openly worked against Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 polls.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike led the group, the point of departure being  the principle of zoning, hereby the party hierarchy refused adopting a southern presidential candidate.

Makinde told journalists, that he had hoped that Tinubu would turn around the fortunes of the country

He said his decision to back Tinubu, was a consideration of national interest and that he believed the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), turn around the fortunes of the country.
