So, what is the best precaution to take to survive a winter storm?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following:

1. insulate any water lines that run along the exterior walls of your home,
2. caulk and weather-strip the doors and windows to your home,
3. insulate walls and the attic,
4. install storm or thermal-pane windows (or cover windows with plastic from the inside if you are in a pinch), repair roof leaks and cut down tree branches that could fall on your home.
5. It’s also important to make sure you have a smoke detector and battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near heat sources
6. get your furnace system and vent inspected every winter season
7. Aside from regular maintenance service on your car, every fall you should have the radiator system serviced or check the antifreeze level yourself with an antifreeze tester.
8. You should also replace your windshield-wiper fluid with a wintertime mix and make sure your car tires have enough tread and air pressure, according to the agency.
