How Thugs Set INEC Office Ablaze In Ogun (Photos)

An Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office at Iyana Mortuary in Abeokuta, Ogun State, is said to have been set on fire by suspected arsonists.

Eight or more thugs, according to sources, leapt the fence into the property, entered, and set the INEC building on fire.

Azeez Hamzat, the facility’s security guard, is reported to have called the police in concern about the event at around 1 am on Thursday.

According to reports, the arsonists doused bread loaves in gasoline before tossing them into the structure.

It was discovered that Ibara division police officers were dispatched to the area as firefighters extinguished the fire.

THEEAGLE gathered that the conference room and the office of the Registration Area Officer were also impacted by the blaze.

A source made a suggestion that the fire also damaged non-sensitive goods.

Niyi Ijalaye, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, confirmed the occurrence.

He said, “It is correct that our office was set on fire. The police are investigating. I do not know what to say. I’m in shock myself. We called the police and other security agencies at night. The fire brigade put the situation under control. The level of damage is still being assessed.

“It is very shocking and untoward. The security agencies are doing their very best. We are meeting again later today to come up with other strategies (toward securing our facilities).”
