How Southwest Houses Of Assembly Became The Envy Of Other Regions

Houses of Assembly in the Southwest may have become the Toast of its peers from the other regions of the country, an indication has shown.

It is now copied by other geopolitical zones for its model of legislation – an adoption of harmonized rules in the day-to-day conduct of legislative business.

This point was made known today by the Chairman of the South-West Legislative Reform Implementation Committee (SLRC) for the majority leaders, Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi

Ogunmolasuyi informed that the adoption of harmonised rules adopted by Houses of Assembly in the region, had caught the attention of other Houses which are now ready to implement it in their respective zones.

“The 9th SLRC has done its best together with its entire members.

“But now during my time, I have to look for ways to improve in all areas at least to ensure if we can be travelling abroad from Nigeria to observe their plenary sessions, nothing should stop us for them and come here.

“And as far as South-West is concerned, the harmonised rules that we are using at the moment are what we took to the national and I believe that they are going to be what all Houses of Assembly will use.

“We have to look for ways to improve on this and should not be left open because our standing order is like a Google map for all legislators and we have to find a way to improve in order to serve our people in a better form. I can assure our people to be expecting something better and greater from me,” he stated.

“We shall also ensure that the platforms which will better the lot of South West Houses of Assembly are created thereby making us the cynosure of eyes amongst all the regions in Nigeria,” he said.

“We are mandated to champion legislative reform and ensure its implementation in the South-West”, said the former Chairman of SLRC, Mr Oyeniran Agunbiade.

“We have achieved brotherhood among majority leaders in the South-West and we have achieved cordiality.

“The forum is striving to ensure that all legislators in South-West come together to know ourselves better, to interact and know the area of interest that will benefit individuals, as well as create harmonious relationship among all the houses in the South-West,” he added.

“We went round the state to attend plenary and see  how the rules are being used. We have been able to encourage all other zones in the country to harmonize their rules.

“We are in the process of making sure that the database for all legislators in the South-West  to come together and interact,” he stated.
