How Pochettino Plans To Salvage Chelsea’s Floundering Season With His Job On The Line

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has made the desperate decision to reorganise his squad because he is aware that his job is in jeopardy.

The Argentine manager took over at Stamford Bridge at the start of the season, however, the relationship has not worked out as Todd Boehly would have hoped so far. To change his fortunes, Pochettino is now considering abandoning his preferred 4-2-3-1 system since Chelsea is mired in 11th place and the season could end in a sacking if results do not follow.

A three-man defence is thought to provide better defensive consistency to a team that has let up four goals in consecutive Premier League defeats to Wolves and Liverpool, according to the Evening Standard. The system change would also provide more protection for senior defender Thiago Silva, who was dangerously exposed when Wolves went wild at Stamford Bridge. An additional defender behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, the struggling midfield duo, would also provide better protection due to their physical limitations. Under the new setup, Ben Chilwell and Malo Gusto would be able to play more freely as wing-backs instead of full-backs.

“We can’t give up and we are going to work hard to try and change, maybe take some decisions to find a different way,” Pochettino said after the game against Wolves. “If it is not working this way, we need to move on and try to find a different type of solution.”

The Argentine’s men will soon be in action against one of the most inform attacks in the league when they take on Aston Villa in the replay of the fourth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday, February 7.
