How Beach Outing By Church Turned Tragic

A beach outing embarked on by a church has turned tragic, leading to the death of one of its members, and throwing the congregation into despair.

The 34-year-old man identified as John died after drowning in the Elegushi Beach, in Lagos State, today Saturday, November 3., where the outing took them.

The church which remains unnamed, had organised the beach outing for its youths and all seemed to go well for the outing until it was time to leave.

The Eagle found that when a count was taken, it was discovered that the late John had not shown up for the journey back home, raising fears that something sinister may have happened,

The others soon embarked on a search around the beach area.

Anxiety grew when someone alerted the church party that they had sighted someone going into the waters.

This prompted lifeguard to dash into the waters, but try as they did, there was no sight of John anywhere.

Full of nerves, others who were in the beach party that day left for home, without one of their members, and remained in the dark as to the fate of John.

On Tuesday afternoon however, his lifeless body was recovered by lifeguards.

According to a Punch source, “A church from Ikorodu had come to Elegushi beach for a hangout on Saturday. They were just young people who came around to have fun; about 35 of them came that Saturday.

 “It happened that late in the afternoon when they were packing up to leave, they called everyone to make sure that they were all accounted for, 35 of them, before they left. That was how they realised that one of them, John, was missing.

“Then they started searching for him that evening. Then, someone told one of them that he had seen the guy walk towards the water thinking he knew how to swim.

“The group then called lifeguards and divers to help search for him that Saturday, but they didn’t find him until yesterday, Tuesday, at about 1 p.m., when they recovered his body at the beach.”

The incident was later confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when the journalist called him.
