Getafe Boss Hails ‘Fantastic’ Greenwood After Thrilling 3-3 Draw With Atletico Madrid

Mason Greenwood was praised by Jose Bordalas as a “fantastic player” following his standout performance in Getafe’s thrilling victory over Atletico Madrid.

Despite having a terrible record against Diego Simeone’s Atletico, Getafe caused a lot of trouble for Los Colchoneros on a thrilling evening at the Civitas Metropolitano. Getafe scored twice in the last minute to earn a draw, but Atletico rallied after Stefan Savic’s red card in the first half to take a 3-1 lead. Greenwood, a Manchester United loanee, was a standout player on the right side of the attack.

Asked about Greenwood after the game, Bordalas said: “A fantastic game, like the whole team. I said it from the first day he arrived, he is a fantastic player, who would reach his best level little by little, we have treated him really well and the whole team has played a great game.

“We were punished for some mistakes in the goals, but we are proud of the team’s play. Football lovers will have enjoyed the game and the impression of a team that has not given up, having conceded the goals the way we did, after having equalised, dominated — any team would have given up at 3-1, but this team never gives up.”

After a six-month inquiry into his behaviour off the pitch concluded, United decided to split ways with Greenwood. He then signed a loan with Getafe, where he has performed admirably. Getafe has expressed their desire to keep Greenwood in Madrid past the conclusion of his current loan agreement, but it is unlikely that United will decide on the winger’s future until far into the following year.

Getafe’s performance has significantly improved since manager Jose Bordalas returned. With just seven games remaining in the season, the team was deep in the relegation zone when they looked to their previous manager. Furthermore, Bordalas has given the team new life as they finish the year as contenders in Europe. They’ll play a local derby against Rayo Vallecano to kick off their league campaign in the new year.
